Hawaii

Pine Mountain

Hello again from Pine Mountain. Glad you could join us. It is the middle of October already. The days are still warm but the nights are getting colder.

This week I cleaned up my old 1982 John Deere snowmobile. It is called a Liquifire and has a 436 cc engine. It is one of the last snowmobiles that John Deere made. Parts are hard to come by since the last one was produced 25 years ago. Somehow I have managed to keep it running all these years. My sister and brother in law use it in the winter time when they go cross country skiing. I have collectors come by every once in a while because it is getting to be a classic. It is worth almost 3 times what I originally paid for it at last estimate.

Well before I bore everyone with ranch life, this week we have expanded several of our sections and added a few new sponsors. We have a new survey this week so let us know what you would like to see in this newsletter.

If you are new to this site, here is how things are arranged. First we have this section where we tell you about things on the ranch and the surrounding area. Next we have sections on Alternative energy, Easy cash, Nutrition and Health, Travel for less, and Adventure and Treasure hunting. Then we have a weekly travel adventure with pictures from somewhere in the world. Each one of the sections has links to websites and products. Finally we have coffee by the roaring fire in the fireplace and wish you a good night and a good week ahead. I hope you enjoy our newsletter and return at least once a week for a new adventure and new products and programs to improve your life.

Wind and Water turbine companies
First for those of you that have just joined us, here at the ranch, power is supplied by 2 wind turbines and a water turbine. We also have a few solar panels that charge up a battery bank. Our horizontal turbine looks like a small wingless airplane on top of it’s 80 foot tower. We purchased that one from www.bergey.com. Our vertical turbine we purchased from

http://www.pacwind.net/, it spins away on a 30 foot or 10 meter pole out by the barn. Our water turbine in the dam of our pond came from an Alaskan alternative energy company http://www.absak.com/. The wind has been normal for this time of year. Every day there is an almost constant 7 or 8 mph wind. In the late afternoon and early evening the wind picks up to about 10 to 15 mph.

And now our feature story.

Adventure on the Big Island of Hawaii

Last year some friends went on vacation to the big Island of Hawaii. This is their story.
We always wanted to go to Hawaii. While all the Hawaiian islands each have their own personality we chose the big island because it is the largest, the newest and has less tourists than the other islands. It also has an active volcano.

We landed at the airport in Hilo. We collected our luggage and then were driven to our hotel room. We checked in and rearranged our luggage then our Hawaiian adventure really began.

History

The Big island was the home of King Kamehameha. He was the first Hawaian king to unite the islands in 1795. The big island is 93 miles wide and is home to the Parker ranch. At 175,000 acres, it is one of the largest cattle ranches in the United States. The island was formed by 5 large volcanoes. 3 are dormant and 2 are active. The 2 active ones are Mauna Loa and Kilauea. They are part of the Volcanoes National Park. Since these volcanoes are still active, the big island is still growing. Around 150,000 people live on the big island. Kona Coffee, Macadamia nuts, Papaya, and orchids are some of the main crops. There is a large astronomy site on Mauna Kea.

Our Travels

We stayed on the Big Island for a week. We visited Akaka falls which is the second largest falls in the world.

From there we went to Volcanoes national park and watched Kilauea make a lava flow.

I went to the train museum at Laupahoehoe.

We rented bicycles and visited several black sand beaches along highway 19.

We visited the observatory on Mauna Kea, The visitor center was at 9200 feet and the observatory was at 9300 feet (2835 meters) There are 12 telescopes on the mountain. Only 3 are owned and operated by Hawaii. The rest are owned by various nations around the world.

We stayed for a week on the big island but we could have stayed a month and not seen everything. Before we knew it our time was up and we were flying home.

Pine Mountain Evening

It is evening and I am relaxing in my easy chair in front of the fireplace. A cheery gas fire takes the chill off the mountain evening. Squeekers my African Grey parrot is sitting on his perch munching peanuts. I am relaxing with my coffee from http://www.coffeefool.com/. Tonight I am trying Caribbean Hazlenut. This coffee has a distinct taste of Hazlenuts. All I can say is that it has a unique taste of hazlenuts and goes well with pie or cookies. Squeekers and I have been watching the latest episode of the Sci fi series Stargate Atlantis. Both my coffee and my TV show are over now. It has been a long day. I put Squeekers in his cage, turn off the gas fireplace, and head upstairs to bed. Good night all see you next week.
