Pine Mountain
Hello again from Pine Mountain. This week it was time to paint the living room. I moved all the furniture out, masked around the windows and doors with painters tape and then painted the room a light beige color. I put Squeekers my African grey parrot in his cage while I was painting. He kept talking away telling me to hurry up. I finally finished painting the room and then I took Squeekers with me I went to my greenhouse garden. Squeekers walked up and down the rows looking for worms as I worked the ground around the beans, lettuce, tomatoes and squash. Finally Squeekers went over to his peanut dish for a snack of his favorite food. This week our story is about a lake in the Antelope valley to the southeast of us. First we have our usual sections on Alternative energy, Easy Cash, Nutrition and Health, Traveling, and Adventure.
Alternative Energy
First for those of you that have just joined us, here at the ranch, power is supplied by 2 wind turbines and a water turbine. We also have a few solar panels that charge up a battery bank. Our horizontal turbine looks like a small wingless airplane on top of it’s 80 foot tower. We purchased that one from http://www.bergey.com/. Our vertical turbine we purchased from http://www.pacwind.net/, it spins away on a 30 foot or 10 meter pole out by the barn. Our water turbine in the dam of our pond came from an Alaskan alternative energy company http://www.absak.com/. The wind has been normal for this time of year. Every day there is an almost constant 7 or 8 mph wind. In the late afternoon and early evening the wind picks up to about 10 to 15 mph.

The price of fuel keeps going up in price. Gasoline is now over $4.50 a gallon. Everyone is looking for anything that will increase fuel economy even a little. Most Alternative energy fuels are still years away but there is a way to improve your mileage, increase your horsepower, and reduce your emissions all at the same time. You will be able to turn your vehicle into a fuel efficient one with only a few readily available items from your local hardware. The instructions are easy to follow and there are many diagrams so you can see how to do it too. It does not matter if you have a gasoline or diesel engine vehicle it will work with either one. Do you want to increase your fuel economy and create 30% less pollution? How about increase your gas mileage and increase your power too. An environmentally safe non toxic product called Ethos will do just that. It improves gas economy by reformulating your gasoline to allow more air to be mixed with the fuel vapor. This causes cleaner combustion and increases power. Your fuel burns more completely and thus produces less emissions. All you have to do is add a couple ounces per tank of gasoline or diesel. Go to http://www.thegassecret.net/ and learn more about this alternative energy supplement.

The Elizabeth Lake Monster
Elizabeth Lake
Location
In the Antelope valley which is 30 miles east and 10 miles south of Pine Mountain is a calm and peaceful lake called Lake Elizabeth. You would not know it to look at the lake but this lake has had a rich and colorful past.
The Legend
Originally in 1780 Father Junipero Serra called the lake La Laguna de Diablo or the devil’s lake. Father Serra and the people that lived around the lake believed that the devil kept one of his pets there. Don Pedro Carrillo a local rancher abandoned his ranch in 1830 after a mysterious fire said to be caused by a flying fire breathing creature from the lake. He alleged the creature was eating all their cattle and burning everything down. Some alleged that the creature had 6 legs and wings like a bat. Others said it was more like a flying serpent or dragon more than 40 feet long and others said it was like a pterodactyl or winged dinosaur. Don Chico Lopez another rancher sold his ranch at a loss after he and his men saw the creature fly out of the lake and eat some of his cattle for lunch. Next came Don Miguel Leonis a 6 foot 4 inch Basque immigrant who was like a feudal lord and eventually owned more than 10,000 acres in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. When the creature attacked his cattle, Don Miguel shot at the creature. His bullets bounced off the creature. In a fit of rage, Don Miguel charged the creature while screaming, and yelling and growling like angry bear. The creature stopped to look at Don Miguel. Don Miguel hit the creature in the nose with his rifle butt then punched the creature in the eye with his fist. The creature flew off into the lake. The creature nursed it’s wounded eye for about a month then was seen leaving the lake and flying off in the direction of Arizona.
Lake Elizabeth
The Naming of the Lake
In 1849, a girl named Elizabeth Wingfield was camping with her family and others on the lakeshore. Elizabeth was filling water buckets from the lake. She walked out on a log that went into the lake lost her footing and fell into the lake. She climbed out of the lake all wet and the settlers joked that this was Elizabeth’s lake. The local settlers began calling it Elizabeth lake. The name eventually became the official name.
Lake Hughes
In 1924 a judge named Hughes started a resort area by the western part of Elizabeth lake. He separated his part of the lake from the main part of the lake. Later after drought shrank the lake they became 2 lakes and the smaller western one became known as Lake Hughes after the judge that founded the community.
The Bandit
In the 1870’s a robin hood like bandit called Tiburcio Vasquez used a small cave by Elizabeth lake as his hideout. The bandit was caught and hanged in 1875.
Present Day
Elizabeth lake and Lake Hughes are known as sag lakes. They are on the San Andreas fault. A part of the Angeles national forest, Elizabeth lake is a day use lake with fishing and light boating use allowed. Light boating means under 10 hp motors. There are picnic facilities and the rolling surrounding hills make a great place to spend an afternoon. Lake Hughes is a private resort lake.
Pine Mountain Evening
It is evening once more. I am relaxing in my easy chair. I just had Steak, baked potatoes, and a salad for dinner. Squeekers my African grey parrot is sitting on his perch eating peanuts. Tonight our sample coffee from http://www.coffeefool.com/ is Fool's House French. This coffee is a rich full bodied coffee with a smoked bean taste. It was pulled out of the roaster just before it burned. Definitely a distinctive taste.
Squeekers and I just finished watching the another episode of an old series called Firefly. It was an old scifi series that lasted a year and a half in 2003 and 2004. Well it is getting late and I am ready to get some sleep. I put Squeekers in his cage and head off upstairs to bed. Good night all see you next week.
