Wind and Water turbine companies
First for those of you that have just joined us, here at the ranch, power is supplied by 2 wind turbines and a water turbine. We also have a few solar panels that charge up a battery bank. Our horizontal turbine looks like a small wingless airplane on top of it’s 80 foot tower. We purchased that one from www.bergey.com. Our vertical turbine we purchased from http://www.pacwind.net/, it spins away on a 30 foot or 10 meter pole out by the barn. Our water turbine in the dam of our pond came from an Alaskan alternative energy company http://www.absak.com/. The wind has been normal for this time of year. Every day there is an almost constant 7 or 8 mph wind. In the late afternoon and early evening the wind picks up to about 10 to 15 mph.

Lake Powell
On the Colorado River at the Utah Arizona border is a large lake called Lake Powell. The lake was formed when the Glen Canyon dam was built. Today it is part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
History
Glen canyon was the second choice after Echo park was deemed to important to submerge. Construction began in October 1956 when President Dwight Eisenhowser pressed the button that set off the charges for the bypass tunnels. The last concrete was poured in September 1963. The turbines and generators were finished in September 1966. On September 22, 1966 the dam was dedicated by Lady Bird Johnson. It took until June 1980 for the lake to reach capacity. Today the Glen canyon and over 80 side canyons form Lake Powell. Each Canyon is an adventure all it’s own.
Our adventure
We drove in from Los Angeles on interstate 40. At
Flagstaff we turned north and went to Page Arizona. We left Page and drove to Wahweap Marina where our friends were waiting for us in a 54 foot houseboat called an Escape. We also had a 19 foot runabout and a kayak.
We left the marina and began exploring Lake Powell. The Lake is about 75 feet below the full level. This leaves a white ring on the read sandstone. Our houseboat is an adventure all it’s own. It is fully equipped with all the comforts of home and even has a hot tub. We have two 115 horsepower engines that propel the boat and a 10 k generator and inverter system for power. We watch our depthfinder so that we do not go too shallow and get stuck.
It was sunset on our first night on the Lake. It is mid September so the water temperature is still warm about 74 degrees F. Daytime temperatures are in the mid 80’s F and nighttime temperatures are in the lower 60’s F. The sun set with a red glow behind the red sandstone cliffs to the west. The stars came out. It is desert out here so in the clear night air there are more stars visible than you can ever imagine.
There are 4 of us on this big 54 foot boat. You can see other boats here and there on the lake but with over 1900 miles of coastline there is plenty of room for everyone. My friend Jim is our captain and his wife Jane is our chief meal planner and hostess. My friend Katy and I are on the upper deck talking and looking at all the stars.
Dinner was served. We have steak, corn, mashed potatoes and gravy. We had dinner rolls and a merlot wine to wash it down. We have ice cream and apple pie for desert. Jim anchors the boat for the night and he and his wife retire to their stateroom. Katy and I talked and watch the stars a little longer marveling at the quiet solitude of the lake. Finally we turned in and went to sleep in our stateroom.
The sun comes up early the next morning. We have breakfast and then Katy and I decide to do some side canyon exploring in the runabout. Jim and his wife are going to cruise down the lake and he showed me on the map where he will be when Katy and I return from our side canyon trip.
Our side trip up a small canyon is amazing so many colors and so many wind and water formed rock formations. There was even a small waterfall. Katy and I spent an adventurous day in the canyons of Lake Powell then we returned to the houseboat. Jim had the houseboat right where he said he would be.
We spent 5 more days and nights on the lake but we could have spent a year on the lake and still not have seen everything. Finally we went back to the marina and turned in the boat. We said good bye to Jim and Jane then headed home to Los Angeles and that was our Lake Powell adventure.
Pine Mountain Evening
It is evening and I am relaxing in my easy chair in front of the fireplace. A cheery gas fire takes the chill off the mountain evening. Squeekers my African Grey parrot is sitting on his perch munching peanuts. I am relaxing with my coffee from http://www.coffeefool.com/. Tonight I am trying chocolate Mint. This coffee has a distinct taste of chocolate mint taste mixed with roast coffee. It goes well with almost all deserts. It is just the right drink for a cold evening.Squeekers and I have been watching the latest episode of the Sci fi series Stargate Atlantis. Both my coffee and my TV show are over now. It has been a long day. I put Squeekers in his cage, turn off the gas fireplace, and head upstairs to bed. Good night all. See you next week.
