Munich and the Castle Tour

Hello again from Pine Mountain. Our strange winter weather continues. The rain stopped and our daytime temperatures have been in the 60 F ( 4 C ) in the daytime and the 30’s F (- 1 C ) at night. The snow level is up around 7000 feet ( ) It does not look like winter wants to arrive this year. Things are about normal here on the ranch. Early morning chores include milking the cows, collecting eggs from the chickens, and cleaning out horse, donkey and cattle stalls.

Breakfast is around 0700 then Squeekers and I work out in the greenhouse tending plants, fertilizing, watering, etc. Squeekers is my African grey parrot. This year I planted a few peanut plants but had to fence them in because Squeekers is trying to harvest them already. Peanuts are Squeekers favorite food.

Since it has been nice weather this winter, I take a ride on Rocket my horse about once a week. My old John Deere snowmobile sits in the barn ready to go but we have not had any snow yet this winter to bring it out.

Well enough about our boring ranch life. If you are new to our newsletter here is how it is laid out.

Munich and the Castle Tour

We arrived at the airport in Munich Germany. We settled into our hotel and the next morning decided to go on the castle tour. We were at the Karstadt pick up stop at 0800. This stop is across the street from the railroad station.
Our tour bus was very comfortable and our guide gave us a history lesson of the whole area as we drove to our first destination.

Our first stop was Linderhoff castle. It was built in the French Rococo style by King Ludwig II and was used as a hunting lodge. We spent almost 2 hours at this castle then it was back on the bus.
Our next stop was the little town of Oberammergau home of world famous master carvers. It was incredible all the intricate carvings that can be made from wood. Finally we boarded our bus
and headed for our most famous stop, Neuschwanstein Castle.

This castle was built in neo Romanesque style by King Ludwig II and looks like a fairy tale castle. This is the castle that Walt Disney used as his model for the famous Disneyland castle. It was fall when we took the tour and the orange, red, and yellow of the leaves on the trees gave it a fantasy fairy tale look and really made the castle stand out. We spent hours touring this castle.
Finally we boarded our bus for the journey back to our pick up point. We saw many other castles perched on hills overlooking lakes and rivers. Our guide would explain the history of the castles as we drove by. Germany is a land of castles. There seems to be a castle on just about every hill and vantage point in the country. When you combine the fairy tale look of the castles and the fall colors of the trees of all the ancient forests, Germany is truly a land of enchantment.
We enjoyed our tour and finally returned to our hotel at 1700. The next day we did a little sightseeing in Munich then boarded our plane. We looked out the window of the plane as the land of castles was slowly left behind.

Pine Mountain Evening

It is a cool winter night as I sit in my easy chair next to the fireplace. The gas fire provides a warming heat.
Squeekers is on his perch munching peanuts. Tonight I am enjoying Pacific Expresso from http://www.coffeefool.com/. This is a full bodied dark roast Italian style coffee with a smooth and strong after taste. This coffee makes you think that you have gone to Seattle. The coffee goes well with a slice of apple pie.Squeekers and I have been watching and old TV series called Highlander. My coffee and pie are now history and my show is over. It has been a long day. I put Squeekers in his cage and turn off the fireplace. It is time for bed. Good night all have a great week. See you next week.

The Island of Bermuda

Pink Sand Beaches

Six hundred miles (1070 kilometers) east of North Carolina lies the island of Bermuda. It is a world class banking center and a popular tourist destination. Bermuda is made up of 138 small islands. Bermuda is a popular tourist destination and is known for it’s pink sand beaches.

History

Bermuda was originally discovered in 1503 by Spanish explorer Juan de Bermudez. It became a replenishment point for ships from 1503 until 1609. In 1609, The Venture, the flagship for a flotilla of ships headed for Jamestown was wrecked on the island. The survivors claimed the island for England and it became part of the holdings of the Virginia Company.

During the 17th century farming was implemented but with limited success. In the 18th century the islands turned to maritime trades. During the 19th century it was turned into a British fortress. During the American Civil war, confederate blockade runners used the islands as a base.

During the second world war, Bermuda was the staging point for convoys going to England. The United States leased land and built an airport that was used by British, United States, and Canadian military until it was closed in 1995. A satellite tracking station was built and maintained by the US military.

An International airport was built and tourism and banking became the main industries.

Climate

The island sits in the gulf stream which keeps the island warm. Hurricanes are always tracking around the islands but because of the small size rarely cause too much damage.

Rain is the only source of water so every building is designed to collect water and send it to storage tanks.

Government

The capital is Hamilton and the islands are one of the oldest British territories. Approximately 66,536 people live on the islands. The standard of living is high and the average house is close to a million dollars.

Pine Mountain Evening

It is evening once more and I am relaxing here on Pine Mountain in my easy chair in front of the fireplace. The gas fueled fire in the fireplace takes the chill off the mountain evening. Squeekers my African Grey parrot is sitting on his perch munching peanuts. I am relaxing with my coffee from http://www.coffeefool.com/. Tonight I am trying Blueberry cinnamon swirl. This coffee has a distinct taste of blueberries and cinnamon mixed with coffee. It goes well with almost all deserts. It is just the right drink for a cold evening. Squeekers and I have been watching another Sci fi series called Highlander. Both my coffee and my TV show are over now. It has been a long day. I put Squeekers in his cage, turn off the gas fireplace, and head upstairs to bed. Good night all. See you next week.

Adventure in the Country

Pine Mountain

Hello again from Pine Mountain. It has been a cloudy week on the mountain. The Sun has been hiding with only an hour or two of sun in the late afternoon. Today it is even raining. It is ten degrees colder than normal and it feels like we are going back into winter instead of heading into summer. Here at the ranch we have our own power. It is furnished by our 2 wind turbines and our water turbine. We also have a few solar panels that charge up a battery bank. Our horizontal turbine looks like a small wingless airplane on top of it’s 80 foot tower. We purchased that one from http://www.bergey.com/. Our vertical turbine we purchased from http://www.pacwind.net/, and our water turbine in the dam of our pond came from an Alaskan alternative energy company http://www.absak.com/. There have been calm days and windy days this week. Even on a calm day we have been able to produce more energy with our wind turbines than we use.

I spent the day working in my attached greenhouse. It is nice to have the greenhouse. No matter what the weather is outside it is still nice inside. I have the greenhouse arraigned in stages. Each stage is about a month behind the stage next to it. That way I always have fresh vegetables.

Squeekers my African grey parrot came out to help. He likes to walk up and down the rows looking for worms. Squeekers has a knack for saying the obvious. I had one of the windows opened before it started to rain. When the rain started coming down, Squeekers was eating peanuts from his peanut bin over by the window. The rain started coming in the window and dripping on Squeekers. Squeekers started talking, “ Wet, Wet help me, help me.” I went over and shut the window. I told him he was a silly bird that did not even know how to get out of the rain. Squeekers then marched down the row saying, “ silly bird, silly bird.”

This week we have an adventure in the country. First we have our usual sections, Alternative energy, Nutrition and Health, Traveling for Less, and Adventure and Treasure Hunting.

Adventure in The Country

Sometimes you just need to get away. There is a legend of the old west about an old miner named flapjack Sam. This miner had a hidden gold mine in the hills of southern California. Once a month flapjack Sam would come into town to buy supplies and he would have a bag of gold nuggets with him. Everyone would ask him if they could come and see his gold mine. Sam would laugh and say, “ Only my partner Jake and I will ever find the mine.” People would ask, “ who is Jake?” Flapjack Sam would laugh and say, “ Jake and his kin are my guards.” Flapjack Sam would load up his supplies. He always bought extra flour and took at least a gallon of milk with him. Everyone would kid him about the milk but Flapjack Sam would just laugh and say, “The milk is for Jake he is my pet rattlesnake. He likes his milk in a saucer.” This went on for years. Many people tried to find Flapjack Sam’s mine but nobody ever did. Many tried to follow him but Sam would always lose them in the hills. Finally after more than twenty years, Flapjack Sam did not come into town for his monthly supplies. The towns people searched the hills for him but nothing was ever found. The legend grew over the years and people say when you are out in the hills camping for the night and a cool wind blows, you can hear Flapjack Sam laughing at you on the wind.

I went camping last summer back in the hills. I took Squeekers my African grey parrot with me. I drove my old 4 wheel drive camper and went way out in the back country. I needed my 4 wheel drive just to get through an old rutted trail. Finally I set up camp on top of a hill. Large boulders surrounded me and made a natural wind break. Squeekers and I took a walk. Squeekers rode on my shoulder. We came to a steep hill, I slipped on the loose dirt and fell down the hill. Squeekers flew off my shoulder then walked back over to me to see if I was okay. Squeekers looked at me and then he said, “ Dumb ass.” Then he laughed at me with his parrot laugh. I got up dusted myself off and then put Squeekers back on my shoulder. I was almost back to my camper when I saw the rattlesnake by the side of the trail. Squeekers and I gave the snake a wide berth then I told Squeekers , “that must be Jake.”

That night the wind started to blow as the full moon came out. The coyotes were howling on the hilltops. I thought I could almost hear flapjack Sam laughing at me. We stayed a few more days but I did not find any gold mine.

Pine Mountain

Well it is evening again on the mountain and I am sitting in my easy chair by the fire in my fireplace. Squeekers the parrot is sitting on his perch chomping peanuts. Tonights coffee of choice is African Safari from http://www.coffeefool.com/.
Tanzanian Peaberry, Kenya AA, Ethiopian, and Zambian Terranova come together to create a blend worth getting lost in. I finish my coffee andI put Squeekers in his cage, turn off the fireplace and head off to bed. Good night all see you next week.

Ural Vacation

Pine Mountain

Hello again from Pine Mountain. It has been a hot, sunny week on the mountain. The Sun has been out steady all week causing the temperatures to be 10 to 12 degrees above normal for this time of the year. It feels like mid summer instead of spring. It has been windy all week too so our energy system has been busy selling excess energy to the grid.

I took a ride on my horse Rocket this Wednesday to check on the cattle and make sure the fences were still in one piece. The spring flowers were blooming and the warm weather made it a relaxing ride. I saw 2 deer in the north pasture and they took off as I approached. The fences were fine and the cattle are grazing on the new spring grasses. I finished my ride and took Rocket back to the barn.

This week Roxana tells the story of her friend Ona and her adventure to the towns and historical places of the Ural mountains. First we have our usual sections, Alternative energy, Health and Wellness, Niche Marketing, Traveling for Less, and Adventure and Treasure Hunting. Ona and her Ural Mountain Vacation

Roxana has a friend named Ona and during the summer of 2004 Ona went on a vacation to the Ural mountains.

Tamerlan's Tower

The first stop was to Tamerlan’s tower. This stone fortress was built during Cossack days as part of a defense line against wild mongrel invaders. The tower is 3.5 kilometers southeast of the village of Varna.

Cossacks

Many of the small towns in the region were named after European capitals by the Cossacks who traveled to these Capitals on official business in the early 1800’s. In this region you will find Paris, Berlin, Leipzig, Varna, Chesma and Port Arthur.
We traveled on through the town of Paris. This town was definitely not Paris, France. The roads were so bad that the best our 4 wheel drive vehicle could do was 2nd gear in 4 low as we crawled over hummock after hummock. The site marked Eiffel tower was actually a silo for ensilage.

Kesene
The next stop was Kesene’s mausoleum. Kesene was the daughter of Tamerlan. Several legends exist. Kesene ran away with a common soldier and then was either killed by soldiers or was killed by wild tigers. The mausoleum was built to honor her passing.
Recently the site was restored complete with gravel walkways and it looks like it is new.

Demidov's Tower

We traveled on to Nevyanks. This city was founded in the 1700’s by Peter the Great on the banks of the Neiva river. In the center of the city is Demidov’s inclined tower. It was the tallest of all the bell towers in the Ural Mountains at a height of 57.5 meters. The only structure taller was the bell tower of Spaso-preobrazhenskiy cathedral at 68 meters. During Soviet days the tower was taken down and the cathedral turned into a mechanical factory. In 2003 the temple has been restored but not to scale so it looks almost like a toy.

Verhoture

We traveled on to Verhoture. Founded in 1598 this city was called the gate to Siberia. Customs duties were collected from goods passing through this gate. In the late 18 and early 19 century a large religious center was built called the empire of sacred Simeona. Simeon was a nobleman but at 17 he refused his inheritance and left for Siberia taking a vow of poverty. He died from excessive abstention at the age of 35. Fifty years later his remains were dug up and found to be just as they were when he was buried. A spring at the burial site is thought to have curative powers and many people come to be healed of their ailments.

In the last few years there has been a revival of Verhotur including plans to make it the capital of the area. The area is full of fast rivers, dense woods, fine valleys and raised rocks. We stopped for the night at the hotel Sable. The next day we toured Troickiy cathedral, and Pious Nikolaev Monastery. The Hague convention in 1959 included Troickiy Cathedral in the collection of most significant moments of architectural history. The cathedral is especially beautiful in morning sunlight when its numerous domes brightly shine. The cathedral is joined to Verhotur kremlin . The stone kremlin is a unique structure because it is the only Ural kremlin not made of earth and wood. The view from the kremlin is breathtaking. The quiet surface of the river Tura, green strips of coast and numerous trees between small wooden houses and smoke curling lazily from the chimneys provides a calmness to the soul. You pass through the sacred gate at the Pious Nikolaev monastery. Women must wear skirts and head scarfs.

Church

Before you are the white domes and dark blue dome of the Preobrazhenskiy temple. To the right is Nikolay Chudotvortsa’s tiny church and behind it is Krestovozdviszhenskiy cathedral. This cathedral is the third largest in Russia and is able to hold 10,000 believers. During Soviet times the cathedral was turned into a cement warehouse but it is now fully restored to it’s original beauty.

We cross a wooden suspension bridge that shakes under our weight and now we are in Pokrovskiy female monastery built in 1621. next we traveled to the village of Merkushino where Saint Simeon Verhoturskii lived when he was alive.

In the village of Kostylevo there is a temple to Kosma Verkhoturskogo. Around it is constructed the new-Tikhvin femal monastery. It looks like a small Swiss village. A new wooden church is being constructed and there is a landing strip for tourist helicopters. Inside the tiny Simeon church are twisted marble columns, numerous gold icons, and a floor with heating multiple colored marble tile. All these riches are guarded by numerous security guards in black uniforms.

The next morning we went to the small town of Verkhnya Pyshma. Here we visited the church of Presvyatoj the virgin. Next we went to Sysert to see Talc’s stone on a rocky shore of a beautiful lake. It is a very rugged area and you need a jeep to make it through. Finally we returned home having driven 2000 kilometers in three days.

Pine Mountain

Well it is evening again on the mountain and I am sitting in my easy chair by the fire in my fireplace. Squeekers the parrot is sitting on his perch chomping peanuts. Tonights coffee of choice is Mocha Java from http://www.coffeefool.com/. It is a mixture of Ethiopian mocha mixed with java island sweet coffee. I finish my coffee and my magazine article at the same time. I am tired so I put Squeekers in his cage, turn off the fireplace and head off to bed. Good night all see you next week.

Desert Life

Pine Mountain

Hello again from Pine Mountain. It has been a typical May gray week on the mountain. We have hazy sunshine and temperatures in the mid 60’s Fahrenheit which is about 18 C Here at the ranch we have our own power.
This week our adventure is about a trip to the desert to help my cousin do the spring preventative maintenance on his 20 irrigation pumps that are on his desert ranch. Without irrigation nothing but cactus and sagebrush grows on his ranch . First we have our usual sections, Alternative energy, Health and Wellness, Niche Marketing, Traveling for Less, and Adventure and Treasure Hunting. We also have a new section that is a short film clip about recent International news stories.

And now for our feature story

Desert Life

This week our adventure is about a trip to my cousin's ranch in the desert to fix and do preventative maintenance on his 20 irrigation pumps.

Every Spring and fall the pumps are inspected and repaired or replaced. The pumps are the only thing that keeps the ranch from returning to cactus and sagebrush.
Some of the pumps are in remote locations and you have to have 4 wheel drive to get to them.

The first thing that goes on a pump is the seals. The pump then starts to leak and does not move the water that it should. These are big pumps from 60 to 120 horsepower. They have vertical motors and need a boom and winch or a tripod and winch to lift the motors so that they can be repaired. Most of the motors are outdoors but a few of them are in pump sheds.

The pumps in the sheds are even harder to work on than the pumps in the open. They also pose the additional danger of rattlesnakes and scorpions that hide in the sheds to escape the desert heat.
The last 4 days in the desert have been anything but nice. The weather has been cold and windy. It is more like March or February weather instead of May weather.
At least with the cold weather we did not see the usual snakes or scorpions. We saw lots of long eared jack rabbits and saw a few mountain lion tracks. We heard the coyotes howling once. Finally the pumps were done and I headed home to Pine Mountain.

Pine Mountain Evening

I returned home from the desert and took a shower. I am now seated in my recliner by the fire and feel warm and clean for the first time in 4 days. Squeekers my African Grey parrot is seated on his perch munching peanuts.I am enjoying my sample coffee from http://www.coffeefool.com/. Tonight I am having fools house American. It is just the right campfire coffee and after the last 4 days it tastes just right. Well it is getting late so I put Squeekers in his cage turned off the fireplace and head for bed. Good night all see you next week.
