Menorca and Ibiza

Pine Mountain
Hello again from Pine Mountain. I spent most of this week commuting back and forth to LA to finish an engineering project I have been working on. Four hours on the road each day wastes a lot of time. In my spare time I have been writing my travel blogs and reading up on Agua culture biosphere gardening. In a nut shell it uses large tanks for hydroponic growing of plants. It takes it a step further by putting fish in the tanks as well. The fish bi products are absorbed by the plants and the plants turn the co2 from the fish into oxygen and use the nitrates from the fish as fertilizer to grow. I am thinking of converting my greenhouse to this system but I have to study it a bit more first.

Well it is mid March already, this year is flying by. So far we have had a mild winter while the rest of the country has been having a cold and snowy winter. What strange weather we have.

Well enough about the Mountain. This week we continue with our 3 section form. So if you are new to our news letter here is how it is laid out.

Section 1----Pine Mountain News

Section2----Our Travel Story

Section3----Pine Mountain Evening

This week we continue our journey through the islands of Spain. Last week we toured Majorca, this week we travel Menorca and Ibiza.

Menorca and Ibiza

We rented a motorcycle and left Palma for Alcudia on Majorca. We arrived in Alcudia then boarded the ferry for Ciutadella on the island of Menorca. Menorca is the second largest island in the Balearic islands. Ciutadella is the second largest city on the island of Menorca. The city is of Moorish design and life moves at a slower pace than on the big island of Majorca.

Ciutadella

Menorca History

Menorca is known for it's stone megaliths that go back to prehistory. The island has a colorful and varied past. It has survived Roman, Moorish, British and Spanish rule. Majorca was liberated from the Moors in 1231 but it took another 56 years before Menorca was liberated. The British took over the island in 1708 and held on to it until 1802 when it was returned to Spain.

Our travels

We left Ciutadella on the ME 1 better known as 271 or the Ciutadella - Majon road. The island poulation is around 88,500 with around 27,500 living in Majon the capital of the island. Majon is called Mao for short. The distance from Ciutadella to Majon is around 40 kilometers. Menorca is flatter than Majorca with gently rolling hills and secluded sandy beaches.

Menorca beach

Menorca inland

The highest point on the island is 1174 feet ( 358 meters) . We spent the first part of the day leisurely riding to Majon.

Menorca beach

While Ciutadella looks like a Moorish designed town Majon looks like a British town of the 19 th century. Majon was the seat of British rule from 1708 to 1802.

Majon

We spent about an hour touring Majon then headed back to Ciutadella to catch the ferry back to Alcudia. We spent the night in Alcudia then went back to Palma where we caught the ferry for Ibiza.

Ibiza

Ibiza is the smallest of the three main Balearic islands and has a reputation as a party island. From June to October various well known bands and DJ's try out new versions of house, trance and techno electronic music.

History

The island was first settled by Phoenicians in 654 BC. Later came Carthage, Rome, Vandals, and Moors. Liberated from Moor rule in 1235 by King James I of Aragon it went on to become a Spanish possession.

Our Adventure

We went dancing at several of the clubs. We were fogged at one of the clubs and foamed at another. One club blended into the next one and before we knew it it was morning. We took the ferry back to Palma and then flew back to Barcelona. It was an interesting week in the Balearic islands of Spain.

Next week we continue down the coast of Spain and tour the city of Valencia.

Pine Mountain Evening.

It is evening once again on Pine Mountain. I am seated in my easy chair by the fire in the fireplace.

Squeekers is on his perch munching peanuts. I am eating cookies and drinking my sample coffee from http://www.coffeefool.com/. Tonight I am enjoying Chocolate Mint. This American roast coffee is another desert coffee that goes well with after dinner sugar cookies. Squeekers and I have been watching another episode of Lost. This soap opera sci fi series has the survivors of a plane crash returning to the time traveling island after leaving the island and being rescued. Well my show and coffee and cookies are done for the night and it is time for bed. I put Squeekers in his cage and turn off the fireplace. Good night all see you next week.

The French Countryside

Hello again from Pine Mountain. It is winter on the mountain. We have 2 inches (5 cm ) of snow and more on the way. The wind is blowing 21 mph ( 34 kmh ) and it is 28 F ( -2 c ). We had swirling fog earlier but it is lifting now.

My garden in the greenhouse is doing well. It is great to work out in the greenhouse in 70 F while the snow and wind swirls outside. I am glad I have my own gas well so that I do not have to worry about energy costs. Squeekers likes it in the greenhouse unless it is raining hard. The sound of rain hitting the greenhouse glass scares him and he hides in the tree stump I made for him.

My little woodworking shop is dormant this year. I am glad I have other sources of income. Last year this time I had more orders than I could keep up with.

This week our story comes from France. It is our second week in that European country.

Well enough about life on the ranch. If you are new to our newsletter here is how things are laid out.

The French Countryside

Last week we were in Strasbourg on the German French border in the Provence of Alsace. This week we leave Alsace behind and enter the Compte region of France. This part of France borders on Switzerland. The capital of the region is Besancon.

Above the city is the Citadelle castle which was built in 1668 and it is illuminated at night. We spent the night in the town of Besancon and then headed south the next morning until we came to the Loire Valley where we stopped to view the Chanonceau Chateau.

We kept meandering our way south through the french countryside and finally reached the coast just west of Marseille. We headed west toward the Spanish
border.

Next week we head into Spain.

Adventure in the Philippines

Hello again from Pine Mountain. We have been having a heat wave here on the west coast while up north and on the east coast they are having record cold. It is the middle of January. Normally we would have snow on the ground and it would be the middle of winter.Instead it is 70 degrees Fahrenheit.Meanwhile the north and east part of the country are having one of the coldest winters on record.

Here on the ranch I have been working in my greenhouse garden. Last week I planted a small peanut patch. This week the plants are already poking through the soil. Squeekers my African grey parrot peeps trying to eat the plants so I had to build a small chicken wire enclosure to keep him out. Well enough about the ranch.

This week our adventure takes place in the Philippines. If you are new to our site, here is how things are organized.

Adventure in the Philippines

Our Plane landed in Manila and after we claimed our luggage, our friends car and driver took us to the apartment in Cubao. The first evening we rested up from our journey and the next morning we explored the local area. We found a farmers market and bought fresh fruit and
vegetables for breakfast.
After breakfast we all piled into the hired jeepney. A jeepney is a stretched jeep that has a rear door and 2 bench seats one on either side. They normally can hold about 10 to 12 people and since were only six people we had plenty of room. The first day we went to Tanay Rizal and met other people that we knew. That evening we went to the local dance club and spent the evening listening to the music and even dancing a little.

The next day we toured the countryside then went up the mountains to a town called Baggio. There we saw the mountain people that they call Indians.

My sister rented a pony and rode around the small park. We spent the night in Baggio then left the next day for a ride down the coast.

We saw fish farms in the lagoon and rice fields everywhere. The farmers used the heated concrete of the road as a place to dry their rice.

We returned to Cubao that evening then the next day we took a tricycle to the market for more fresh vegetable. A tricycle is a motor bike with an elaborate side car added. They are used the same way we use taxis here.

After breakfast we took our hired jeepney and went to visit an old Marcos mansion called Palace in the sky.

We stopped at three sisters falls on the way back. Three sisters is a resort where many movies have been made. We spent several more days touring the islands and then it was time to head home. We said goodbye to our hosts and then took the long plane ride back to the United States..

Pine Mountain Evening

It is evening once more and I am relaxing here on Pine Mountain in my easy chair in front of the fireplace. The gas fueled fire in the fireplace takes the chill off the mountain evening. Squeekers my African Grey parrot is sitting on his perch munching peanuts.

I am relaxing with my coffee from http://www.coffeefool.com/. Tonight I am trying Raspberry Squared. This coffee has both red and black raspberries mixed with American roast coffee . If you like raspberries this is the coffee for you. It is just the right drink for a cold evening. Squeekers and I have been watching another Sci fi series called Highlander. Both my coffee and my TV show are over now. It has been a long day. I put Squeekers in his cage, turn off the gas fireplace, and head upstairs to bed. Good night all. See you next week.

A Journey to Tasmania

Hello again from Pine Mountain. Well the first week of the new year is over. The holidays are now a memory until the end of the year. This week I finished taking down the Christmas decorations. They are now in there boxes for another year.

The snowstorm that we were expecting did not quite happen this week. We just had a little dusting of snow. You have to go above 7000 feet to find any real snow. There is about 6 to 10 inches( 2.36cm to 3.9 cm) above that level. Down here at the ranch it almost makes 50 F (10 C) in the day time. At night it is in the 20s F (- 6C). Our ever present wind makes it seem a lot colder. In about a week or two winter will really set in.

Well it is chores as usual here on the ranch. Nothing much changes there. I am glad for my greenhouse. Even when it is winter outside my greenhouse stays nice and warm at around 70 F( 21 C). I get to have fresh vegetables year around. These days with the economy the way it is, more people need to start growing vegetables to stretch their income. The next few years are going to be rough on just about everyone worldwide.

This year I have set aside a small section of the greenhouse to try and grow peanuts which is the favorite food of Squeekers, my African grey parrot. Peanuts need a sandy soil to grow well and they are planted deep about 2 inches deep. The plants need to be spaced about 7 inches apart. I watered them well when I planted them from raw peanuts. You can also plant them from seeds but it takes longer and you usually do not get good results. I waited until they sprouted to water them again. Peanuts have a long growing season about 130 days. They need to be watered sparingly or they will rot. We will see at harvest time if it was worth all the effort.

Well enough about things at the ranch this week we have a story about a sightseeing trip to Tasmania.

A Journey to Tasmania

Last week we were in the frozen north. This week it is time to warm up and visit the land down under. Tasmania is a group of islands 150 miles (240 Kilometers) south of Australia on the eastern side of the country. Tasmania is a part of Australia. And since it is in the southern hemisphere, the seasons are the reverse of ours. Right now in January it is the middle of summer.

We flew into Hobart the capital of Tasmania from Sidney on Quantas. This time of year it is the dry season but even in the dry season it rains about every second day. The main island is slightly larger than the US state of West Virginia. Tasmania is 26,410 square miles (68,401 square Kilometers). About one third of the island is nature preserves and is in a natural untouched state. The northern coast is the most populous. Today almost 500,000 people live in Tasmania.

We picked up our rental car went across the Tasman bridge and took the east Derwent highway north to Bridgewater. At Bridgewater we turned on the Midland highway. We drove on until we came to Oatlands where we stopped to tour the old historical Callington mill.

Oatland is a town of about 500 people.

After lunch we continued north on Midland highway better known as highway 1. We arrived in Launceston just before dark and spent the night there.

The next morning we headed west on highway 1 through Westbury and turned south on highway 5 at Deloraine. We stopped for lunch at Liffey falls.

We kept heading south and went around Great Lake. We turned on Waddamana road. We took that to Bashan road and took Bashan road to Victoria Valley road. We continued on until we reached the city of Ouse where we spent the night.

The next day we headed south on Lyell Highway. We stopped for lunch at New Norfolk then on to Bridgewater then south to Hobart. We spent the night in Hobart and caught our plane to Sidney the next morning. This was another vacation where we needed more time to thoroughly explore the island. Maybe another year.

That was our Tasmanian journey.

Tasmanian History

The original inhabitants, the aborigines settled in Tasmania over 35,000 years ago. Tasmania was joined to mainland Australia until the end of the last ice age about 10,000 years ago.The first European to find the island was Abel Tasman in 1642. The island was later named after him.

The native population was about 10,000 when the Europeans arrived. In 1833 there ranks had dwindled to about 300 because of war disease and mistreatment. The last 300 were moved to Flinders island by 1833.

The first european colonies on the island were prison colonies in the early 1800's. Today the island is an Australian state.

Tonight I am trying Moca Java . This coffee has a distinct taste of Ethiopian Mocha mixed with the distinct taste of coffee from the Java islands . It goes well with almost all deserts.

An Adventure in Corsica

We left Estonia behind us and flew to Paris, France. We had a few hours in Paris then we flew to Campo del Oro airport in Ajaccio, Corsica. Ajaccio is on the western shore of the island of Corsica about halfway down the island.

Geography

One of the 26 regions of France, Corsica is a large Mountainous island in the western Mediteranean. Even though it is closer to Italy, 90 kilometers (56 miles) than France 170 kilometers (110 miles) it has been a French possession since 1764 when Genoa sold it to France.
The island of Corsica is 183 kilometers (114 miles) long and 83 kilometers (52 miles) wide. The main mountain range runs north and south.

Climate

There are three main climates on the island. Coastal Mediterranean from sea level to 610 meters (2000 feet). Temperate mountain from 610 meters (2000 feet) to 910 meters (3000 feet). Alpine 910 meters (3000 feet) to 2706 meters (8880 feet). Most people live below 610 meters (2000 feet). Sheperds and hikers travel 610 meters (2000 feet to 910 meters (3000 feet) and only a few alpine climbers travel in the 910 meter (3000 feet) to 2706 meter (8880 feet) zone.

Our Adventure

Arriving in Ajaccio we rented a car and headed south. We stopped for the night in the little town of Sartene.

Sartene

The next morning we resumed our journey south on N 196. This road is twisting and winding and seems to go on forever. Finally late in the afternoon on the second day we reached the southernmost city on the island. This is Bonafacio, the city on the cliff.

Bonafacio

We spent the night in Bonafacio and the next morning headed north. Our next stop was Porto Vecchio.

Porto

We had lunch here then continued up the east coast on N198. It was late afternoon when we reached the town of Aleria after driving for hours and admiring the coastal view. We spent our third night there. We leisurely drove up the coast on N198 and N193 and stopped for our 4th night at Bastia.

Bastia

Our fifth day we headed back across the island on N193. Climbing over the mountains we arrived back in Ajaccio on the evening of the fifth day. We spent the night in Ajaccio then flew back to Paris on the sixth day. We were sad to leave the island of Corsica. We could have spent several months there and still not seen everything. We will have to come back another time and take a more leisurely visit.

Tonight I am trying Santa's Cookie Coffee. This coffee has a distinct taste of vanilla and almond butter mixed with American roast coffee. It is another desert coffee. It is just the right drink for Christmas and it goes well with a plate of chocolate chip cookies. Squeekers and I have been watching another Sci fi series called Highlander. Both my coffee and my TV show are over now. It has been a long day. I put Squeekers in his cage, turn off the gas fireplace, and head upstairs to bed. Good night all. See you next week.

Journey to Estonia

Welcome to Pine Mountain Ranch. This week winter has arrived. A big winter storm arived on Tuesday and has been with us the rest of the week. I took the old John Deere snowmobile out for the first time this season. I went out and checked the fence line on the back pasture. Everything was good so I drove back to the ranch. Heavy snow makes the normal ranch chores just a little bit harder. Squeekers my parrot and I worked out in the attached green house this week. It is nice to be able to work in a shirtsleeve environment while the snow swirls around just outside the window. It is also great to have fresh produce all year long. Squeekers does not quite know what to think about the snow except he knows that he does not like it and stays mostly in the middle of the greenhouse on winter days.

And now our feature story

A Journey to Estonia

Leaving the island of Jersey we made our way north to the Scandinavian countries. First we visited Denmark then Sweden and finally we crossed the Baltic Sea to the little country of Estonia.

Estonia is a little Scandinavian country that is south of the Gulf of Finland. Sweden is to the west across the Baltic Sea. South of Estonia is Latvia another small Scandinavian country. East of Estonia is Russia.

History

People have lived in Estonia since the last ice age about 8500 BC. The Estonians are closely related to the Finns in Finland their neighbor to the north. Since 1227 AD one country or another has taken over the country. First it was the Danes and Germans and then in the 1500s Sweden became the ruler. This lasted until 1721 when the Swedes gave the country to Russia. The Estonians broke away from Russia in 1918 and became a democracy. This lasted until 1940 when the Russians annexed the country. The Germans then invaded the country then the Russians again in 1944. Estonia then became part of the Soviet Union until 1991 when the Soviet Union disbanded. The Estonians then reclaimed their independence. Since 1991 the country has embarked on rapid economic growth and has become a leader in communications and internet technology. This is the home of Skype the free internet phone service.

Jagala Joa Waterfall

We enjoyed our stay in Estonia and were sad when it came time to leave. It was raining as our flight left Tallinn International. We watched as the green countryside fell away behind us.

Pine Mountain Evening

I am seated in my recliner by the fire in our gas fireplace. Squeekers my african grey parrot is on his perch muncing his favorite snack peanuts. Outside our first major winter storm of the season has turned our ranch white with snow. I have just finished my dinner of pot roast with mashed potatoes and corn and I am now enjoying gingerbread cookies for desert with this weeks coffee flavor of the week Tropical Vanilla from our friends at==> http://www.coffeefool.com/ . The vanilla taste brings out the flavor of the coffee and goes quite well with our gingerbread cookies.

Squeekers and I have been watching another old sci fi seriesd called Andromeda on TV. Now both my cookies and my coffee are history and my TV show is over. It is time to get some sleep. I put squeekers in his cage and turn off the gas fireplace. I head upstairs to bed. Good night all see you next week.
