Welcome to Pine Mountain. Christmas 2008 is now history. My sister came to visit with her daughter and husband.We had a big Christmas feast and plenty of presents under the tree. After dinner, we took the horses out and went for a ride in the new fallen snow.

We came back from our ride and turned on the Christmas lights. All the lights plus a lit snowman and Santa and his sleigh make the ranch shine at night.


This week our feature story is about Corsica France. Corsica is an island in the western mediterranean that is one of the 26 provences of France.

An Adventure in Corsica

We left Estonia behind us and flew to Paris, France. We had a few hours in Paris then we flew to Campo del Oro airport in Ajaccio, Corsica. Ajaccio is on the western shore of the island of Corsica about halfway down the island.

Geography

One of the 26 regions of France, Corsica is a large Mountainous island in the western Mediteranean. Even though it is closer to Italy, 90 kilometers (56 miles) than France 170 kilometers (110 miles) it has been a French possession since 1764 when Genoa sold it to France.
The island of Corsica is 183 kilometers (114 miles) long and 83 kilometers (52 miles) wide. The main mountain range runs north and south.

Climate

There are three main climates on the island. Coastal Mediterranean from sea level to 610 meters (2000 feet). Temperate mountain from 610 meters (2000 feet) to 910 meters (3000 feet). Alpine 910 meters (3000 feet) to 2706 meters (8880 feet). Most people live below 610 meters (2000 feet). Sheperds and hikers travel 610 meters (2000 feet to 910 meters (3000 feet) and only a few alpine climbers travel in the 910 meter (3000 feet) to 2706 meter (8880 feet) zone.

Our Adventure

Arriving in Ajaccio we rented a car and headed south. We stopped for the night in the little town of Sartene.

The next morning we resumed our journey south on N 196. This road is twisting and winding and seems to go on forever. Finally late in the afternoon on the second day we reached the southernmost city on the island. This is Bonafacio, the city on the cliff.

We spent the night in Bonafacio and the next morning headed north. Our next stop was Porto Vecchio.

Porto

We had lunch here then continued up the east coast on N198. It was late afternoon when we reached the town of Aleria after driving for hours and admiring the coastal view. We spent our third night there. We leisurely drove up the coast on N198 and N193 and stopped for our 4th night at Bastia.


Bastia

Our fifth day we headed back across the island on N193. Climbing over the mountains we arrived back in Ajaccio on the evening of the fifth day. We spent the night in Ajaccio then flew back to Paris on the sixth day. We were sad to leave the island of Corsica. We could have spent several months there and still not seen everything. We will have to come back another time and take a more leisurely visit.

Pine Mountain Evening

It is evening once more and I am relaxing here on Pine Mountain in my easy chair in front of the fireplace. The gas fueled fire in the fireplace takes the chill off the mountain evening. Squeekers my African Grey parrot is sitting on his perch munching peanuts. I am relaxing with my coffee from http://www.coffeefool.com/. Tonight I am trying Santa's Cookie Coffee. This coffee has a distinct taste of vanilla and almond butter mixed with American roast coffee. It is another desert coffee. It is just the right drink for Christmas and it goes well with a plate of chocolate chip cookies. Squeekers and I have been watching another Sci fi series called Highlander. Both my coffee and my TV show are over now. It has been a long day. I put Squeekers in his cage, turn off the gas fireplace, and head upstairs to bed. Good night all. See you next week.

Journey to Estonia

Welcome to Pine Mountain Ranch. This week winter has arrived. A big winter storm arived on Tuesday and has been with us the rest of the week. I took the old John Deere snowmobile out for the first time this season. I went out and checked the fence line on the back pasture. Everything was good so I drove back to the ranch. Heavy snow makes the normal ranch chores just a little bit harder. Squeekers my parrot and I worked out in the attached green house this week. It is nice to be able to work in a shirtsleeve environment while the snow swirls around just outside the window. It is also great to have fresh produce all year long. Squeekers does not quite know what to think about the snow except he knows that he does not like it and stays mostly in the middle of the greenhouse on winter days.

A Journey to Estonia

Leaving the island of Jersey we made our way north to the Scandinavian countries. First we visited Denmark then Sweden and finally we crossed the Baltic Sea to the little country of Estonia.

Estonia is a little Scandinavian country that is south of the Gulf of Finland. Sweden is to the west across the Baltic Sea. South of Estonia is Latvia another small Scandinavian country. East of Estonia is Russia.

History

People have lived in Estonia since the last ice age about 8500 BC. The Estonians are closely related to the Finns in Finland their neighbor to the north. Since 1227 AD one country or another has taken over the country. First it was the Danes and Germans and then in the 1500s Sweden became the ruler. This lasted until 1721 when the Swedes gave the country to Russia. The Estonians broke away from Russia in 1918 and became a democracy. This lasted until 1940 when the Russians annexed the country. The Germans then invaded the country then the Russians again in 1944. Estonia then became part of the Soviet Union until 1991 when the Soviet Union disbanded. The Estonians then reclaimed their independence. Since 1991 the country has embarked on rapid economic growth and has become a leader in communications and internet technology. This is the home of Skype the free internet phone service.

Our Travels

We landed at the international airport in the capital city of Tallinn. After touring the capital city and watching container ships unloading in the harbor we headed south into the country. Estonia is a country of lakes there are more than 1400 of them. The people are friendly and industrious. We met a farmer that showed us how rich the soil was. The average yearly temperature is 5.2 C. The warmest month is July when the temperature is 16.4 C. The coldest month is February when the temp is – 5.7 C. There are large areas of forest where Lynx, wild boars, bears and wolves live. The wetlands support many different bird species. It rains in Estonia about 160 to 190 days each year. There are about 1.4 million residents of Estonia in There are 33 cities with the largest being the capital city of Tallinn with 403,500 people.

We enjoyed our stay in Estonia and were sad when it came time to leave. It was raining as our flight left Tallinn International. We watched as the green countryside fell away behind us.

Pine Mountain Evening

I am seated in my recliner by the fire in our gas fireplace. Squeekers my african grey parrot is on his perch muncing his favorite snack peanuts. Outside our first major winter storm of the season has turned our ranch white with snow. I have just finished my dinner of pot roast with mashed potatoes and corn and I am now enjoying gingerbread cookies for desert with this weeks coffee flavor of the week Tropical Vanilla from our friends at==> http://www.coffeefool.com/ . The vanilla taste brings out the flavor of the coffee and goes quite well with our gingerbread cookies.

Squeekers and I have been watching another old sci fi seriesd called Andromeda on TV. Now both my cookies and my coffee are history and my TV show is over. It is time to get some sleep. I put squeekers in his cage and turn off the gas fireplace. I head upstairs to bed. Good night all see you next week.

The Isle of Jersey

Welcome to Pine Mountain. It is mid December already. The Christmas season is in full swing. Tonight there is a full moon. The moon is at its closest approach to the earth for the year. This means high tides tonight.

I went for a ride on Rocket my horse this week and as we rounded a turn on the path an 8 point buck deer ran across the path in front of us. Rocket was startled and reared up on his hind legs. Somehow I managed to stay on Rocket until he settled down.

Back at the ranch, Squeekers my African grey parrot is enjoying the lights and music of Christmas. He keeps saying,"pretty lights, pretty lights" over and over. he also has the first two words of Jingle bells except he says "Jingle bell"

Our newsletter is getting to be a bit long so for the next few weeks we will divide up the sections and make 4 different newsletters. The Isle of Jersey


12 Nautical miles north of France and 87 nautical miles south of England is the Isle of Jersey. The island has a history that goes back over a thousand years. Jersey island is known for it 's financial center, Jersey cows, fishing, potatoes, apples, and tourism. Approximately 84,000 people live on Jersey, 47 % are immigrants.

History

Jersey was annexed by the duke of Normandy in 933AD. Although King John lost mainland Normandy in 1204, he retained possession of Jersey and Guernsey islands. In the 1640’s when Charles II was in exile, Jersey governor, George Carteret helped him and was later rewarded with a piece of land in the New world. This land later became the state of New Jersey in the United States.

Mount Orgueil

We arrived at the Jersey airport on Thursday. There are many things to see in Jersey. We toured Liberation Square, The Jersey Opera House, the parade gardens, the royal square, mount Orgueil, lle’Agois, Beauport Beach, and King Street. We visited Belcroute Beach, Petit Porte, and Portelet beach where we walked down a steep set of stairs to the beach. We only had 2 days to spend on the island but we could have spent a week and still had things to see.

Hello again. I am seated in my favorite easy chair by a nice cheery fire in the fireplace. I am eating sugar cookies and drinking Chocolate Mint coffee available from www.the coffeefool.com. The mint and the chocolate really bring out the taste of the coffee. It makes an excellent desert beverage.
Squeekers my African grey parrot is on his perch munching peanuts. We have just finished watching an episode of the sci fi series Stargate Atlantis. Well it is getting late and it is time for bed. I turn off the gas fireplace and put Squeekers in his cage. Everyone have a good week and we will see you next week.

Welcome to Pine Mountain. The first week in December is over already. The Christmas season is upon us.The store owners are hoping for big Christmas sales, but with the economy being what it is and all the layoffs they may be disappointed.

This week I finished putting up the Christmas decorations. We have so many lights and decorations that it took me 2 weeks to get everything up and working. Now we light up the whole ranch when we turn the lights on at night. Good thing we produce our own power between the wind turbines,the solar panels and the water turbine otherwise we would have a large electric bill.


This week our feature story is Lauterbrunnen Switzerland.It is a scenic village high in the Swiss Alps. Some of my friends went there last summer and wrote me a story about their adventures.

Lauterbrunnen Switzerland

Some friends of mine were traveling in Europe and stopped for a few days in Lauterbrunnen Switzerland. This is the story of their adventures. The name of the village means many springs. The village is in a U shaped valley and the river Weisse Lutschine flows through the middle of the valley. In the springtime when the snow melts the river overflows it’s banks.

Author J. R. R. Tolkien used Lauterbrunnen valley as his model for valley of Rivendall in “ Lord of Rings”.

We came in to the village of Lauterbrunnen on the Berner Oberland Bahn train from Interlaken. There is also the Wengernalpbahn train that goes to Grindelwald and an aerial tramway that goes to the mountain village of Murren. Lauterbrunnen is a charming little village that has many things to see both in the summer and in the winter.

We spent several days in the village. Our first day we hiked to the famous Trummelbach glacier falls and watched the water pour down the sheer wall of the mountain cliff. As you climbed the trail you could see the village far below in a very scenic panoramic view.

The second day we took the aerial tramway to the high mountain village of Murren. Even in summer the mountain peaks are snow covered. You can look up from Murren and see the famous snow covered north face of Eiger Mountain.

The third day of our visit we spent exploring in and around the town of Lauterbrunnen. We had to leave and return to Interlaken on the fourth day and we wished that we could have had more time to explore.


Pine Mountain Evening

It is evening once more and I am relaxing here on Pine Mountain in my easy chair in front of the fireplace. The gas fueled fire in the fireplace takes the chill off the mountain evening. Squeekers my African Grey parrot is sitting on his perch munching peanuts. I am relaxing with my coffee from http://www.coffeefool.com/. Tonight I am trying Creme Brulee. This coffee has a distinct taste of vanilla and brown sugar mixed with coffee. It is another desert coffee. It is just the right drink for a cold evening and it goes well with a plate of chocolate chip cookies. Squeekers and I have been watching another Sci fi series called Highlander. Both my coffee and my TV show are over now. It has been a long day. I put Squeekers in his cage, turn off the gas fireplace, and head upstairs to bed. Good night all. See you next week.

The Island of Bermuda

Welcome to Pine Mountain. Thanksgiving is over. Here on the ranch we had ham,smoked prime rib, turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes,corn,bean casserole, stuffing,cranberry salad,celery sticks with dip, apple pie,pumpkin pie, and cookies. We had apple juice, milk and wine to wash it down. My sister, her husband and my niece came over for Thanksgiving. We had our big thanksgiving dinner then my sister Laurel and her daughter Grace went horseback riding.

This week I am almost done putting up the Christmas decorations. We have so many lights and decorations that it takes about 2 weeks to get everything up and working.

The Island of Bermuda

Pink Sand Beaches

Six hundred miles (1070 kilometers) east of North Carolina lies the island of Bermuda. It is a world class banking center and a popular tourist destination. Bermuda is made up of 138 small islands. Bermuda is a popular tourist destination and is known for it’s pink sand beaches.

History

Bermuda was originally discovered in 1503 by Spanish explorer Juan de Bermudez. It became a replenishment point for ships from 1503 until 1609. In 1609, The Venture, the flagship for a flotilla of ships headed for Jamestown was wrecked on the island. The survivors claimed the island for England and it became part of the holdings of the Virginia Company.

During the 17^th century farming was implemented but with limited success. In the 18^th century the islands turned to maritime trades. During the 19^th century it was turned into a British fortress. During the American Civil war, confederate blockade runners used the islands as a base.

During the second world war, Bermuda was the staging point for convoys going to England. The United States leased land and built an airport that was used by British, United States, and Canadian military until it was closed in 1995. A satellite tracking station was built and maintained by the US military.

An International airport was built and tourism and banking became the main industries.

Climate

The island sits in the gulf stream which keeps the island warm. Hurricanes are always tracking around the islands but because of the small size rarely cause too much damage.

Rain is the only source of water so every building is designed to collect water and send it to storage tanks.

Government

The capital is Hamilton and the islands are one of the oldest British territories. Approximately 66,536 people live on the islands. The standard of living is high and the average house is close to a million dollars.

A Journey to Big Bear Lake

Hello again from Pine Mountain. Glad you could join us. It is nearly the end of November. Next week is Thanksgiving. This week I started putting up the Christmas decorations. We have so many lights and decorations that it takes about 2 weeks to get everything up and working.
I hitched up Pete the mule to his cart and finished installing a new gate on the back pasture. I took my horse Rocket for a ride and startled 2 deer in the back pasture. The rest of the week it was just the usual ranch chores.

This week our feature story is about a scenic drive on highway 18 to Big Bear Lake. Highway 18 is known as rim of the world drive. Big bear is about 100 miles southeast of us here in Pine Mountain.

A journey to Big Bear Lake

Big Bear is a lake high in the San Bernadino mountains. It is 7 miles (11.2 KM) long and 2.5 miles (4 KM) wide. It is 72 feet (22 meters) deep at the deepest point up by the dam. The lake is a snow fed lake. The only water comes from the melting snow on the surrounding mountains.

The warmest month is July when the temperature approaches 80 F (27 C) in the daytime. At night it is still cold 47 F (8.4 C). The coldest month is January. The normal January day time temp is 47 F (8.4 C) and 20 F (-6.3 C). The coldest temperature ever recorded was January 29 1979 of -25 F (-32 C).

The elevation of the lake is at 6750 Feet (2060 meters). It receives and average of 61.8 inches (157 cm) of snow each year and 100 inches (254 cm) falls above 8000 feet (2400 meters) .

There are 3 ways to get to Big Bear. Highway 330 from Running Springs splits at treasure island and becomes the north and south shore roads. The south shore road goes through the community of Big Bear Lake and then goes to Big Bear City at the east end of the lake.

Highway 38 from the southeast joins the south shore road at Big Bear City. Highway 18 joins at Big Bear City coming from Apple Valley to the north.

There are 3 ski resorts around the lake. They are Snow Summit, Big Bear, and Stanfield Cutoff.

History

The Big Bear area was populated by Serrano Indians for 2500 years. They thought Bears were their ancestors so the bear population in the valley was out of control because the Indians did not hunt bears. The first white man to discover the lake was Benjamin Wilson in the 1850’s . The Indians had been raiding the riverside ranches for cattle and horses. Benjamin led a party of 22 men to bring back the lost livestock. When they found the valley full of bears they became a hunting party and killed 11 bears. William Holcomb discovered gold in 1859 and the valley was soon swarming with miners.

The first dam was built in 1884 and held back 25,000 acre feet of water. In 1912 a second dam was built 300 feet (91 meters) below the first dam. This dam held back 73,000 area feet.

Our Adventure

We left Pine Mountain and went on a small 2 day camping and fishing trip in the summer of 2003. We came from the west on highway 330 from Running Springs. We drove the south shore until we reached Big Bear City then we drove the north shore. We drove through the town of Fawnskin and camped at lighthouse camp. It was warm during the day but it was cold at night even though it was mid July.

The scenery was awesome and it was a couple of days to relax from the cares of the world.

Driving Through Big Sur

Hello again from Pine Mountain. Glad you could join us. It the middle of November.We are having what is called a Santa Anna. The winds blows off the desert. It is dry and hot in the daytime and cold and clear at night.
This week I have been working in my woodshop making more bookshelves and end tables for the little furniture store up town. In between Squeekers, my African grey parrot, and I have been tending the garden in the greenhouse. We have fresh lettuce and tomatoes, carrots, radishes, turnips, and even rhubarb that we made into a Rhubarb pie.
I hooked Pete the mule up to his little cart and went out and checked the fence line before winter sets in. I went for a ride on Rocket my horse and this rider on a dirt bike almost ran us off the trail. Well enough about the ranch. This week our feature story is about a scenic drive up the northern California coast to Big Sur.

First for those of you that have just joined us, here at the ranch, power is supplied by 2 wind turbines and a water turbine. We also have a few solar panels that charge up a battery bank. Driving Thru Big Sur

The Big Sur area of California is a coastal range of the Santa Lucia Mountains. It starts about 245 miles (394 km) north of Los Angeles and ends about 120 miles (193 km) south of San Francisco. The area extends about 20 miles (32 km) inland.

Several years ago I traveled with a friend through the Big Sur Area. Highway 1 is the only real road through the area. Highway 1 twists and winds through the Santa Lucia mountains making hundreds of turns. Each turn brings another breathtaking view. There are so many micro climates you can have redwoods one minute and cactus the next. Any land that is for sale comes with a high price tag. Usually over $2 million. Most residents are either original ranchers or wealthy entertainment types. The county ordinance that keeps all structures out of view of highway 1 keeps the area pristine and wild. Small observation pull offs give you plenty of

opportunities to take pictures.

and marvel at the sights. There is even a waterfall that pours directly into the ocean. There are only 3 gas stations in the whole area and hotel rooms come at a premium. Highway 1 is an adventure in itself and a way to leave the civilized world behind at least for a day or two.

History

The first inhabitants were Indians. Three tribes lived in the big Sur Area for thousands of years. They were the Ohlone, the Esselen, and the Salinan. They were hunter gatherers and lived on mussels, abalone, fish, and acorns.

The Spanish.

Juan Cabrillo was the first to visit the area in 1542 but it was not until 1770 that the Spanish padre Junipero Serra came to Monterey bay and established a mission there. Between the European diseases and the Spanish treating the Indian like slaves, the Indian population was soon wiped out.
Next it was the era of Ranchos and land grants. The area became part of Mexico in 1821 then part of the United States in 1848. The United states passed the homestead act and several hardy pioneers staked out their 160 acre claims.

Industrial Times

The lumber industry made short work of the coast redwoods. Landings were set up for ships and gold mining and limestone quarrying began. The industrial boom faded and the area became wilderness again. The completion of highway 1 in1937 changed the area for good. Writers and artists began to move into the area.

Today

Most of the area is now part of the Los Padres national forest or part of the military area known as Fort Hunter Liggett. There are no real towns. Three small areas of civilization at Big Sur, Lucia, and Gorda make up most of the population of 1000. The basin Complex fire of 2008 burned about 130,000 acres and destroyed 27 homes. The area will take a few years to get back to anything resembling what it once was.


Pine Mountain Evening

It is evening and I am relaxing in my easy chair in front of the fireplace. A cheery gas fire takes the chill off the mountain evening. Squeekers my African Grey parrot is sitting on his perch munching peanuts. I am relaxing with my coffee from http://www.coffeefool.com/. Tonight I am trying Chocolate Raspberry. This coffee has a distinct taste of raspberries and chocolate taste mixed with roast coffee. It goes well with almost all deserts. It is just the right drink for a cold evening. Squeekers and I have been watching the latest episode of the Sci fi series Stargate Atlantis. Both my coffee and my TV show are over now. It has been a long day. I put Squeekers in his cage, turn off the gas fireplace, and head upstairs to bed. Good night all. See you next week.
